As a solo creator, you’ve heard the old say 1,000 times. “You need a list.” “If you don’t have a list you don’t have a business.” “If you don’t have a list you’re a jerk.” OK, maybe not that last one…

But once you get that list, then what?

Most creators start jam-cramming their readers’ inboxes with hundreds of words of self-promotion, me-me-me, and ‘buy my stuff!’

These emails are awful and hard to choke-down.

After a first reading it’s unlikely we’ll open your next email.

In fact, stop sending ‘emails’ altogether.

Instead, have a conversation. Now, the delivery vehicle happens to be email, but you could have the same conversation if the person stood before you.

Part of a good conversation is to stop focusing on yourself and focus on the person across from you.

  • What does she want?
  • What keeps her awake at night?
  • What transformation does she seek (from where she is now to where she wants to be)?
  • What does she stand for?
  • What doesn’t she want in her life?
